The first day of the New Year is also the first day in office for the new mayor of Plattsburgh.
James Calnon and the Plattsburgh Common Council were sworn in at City Hall, eager to start their terms in office.
Calnon served on the Common Council for six years, and thinks it will be a smooth transition to mayor.
"I'm hoping that the communication that's here now continues. We'll continue to work with our department heads and our labor unions to make sure we keep that level of communication up, so that when there's a difficult issue to talk about we have some trust built up and we can be honest and open and move things along," said Mayor James Calnon, R-Plattsburgh.
Calnon says his first priority is maintaining the city's budget. After that, he says he wants to take advantage of the steadily growing economy.
"The first thing that's going to be before this new council is we have a request for proposals out for waterfront development at the end of Dock Street, and that's a good start," Calnon said.
Along with building upon the city's beach, Calnon says the airport is in for some changes, as well.
"The county has received approval to put a hotel there; we certainly hope that happens. That will upgrade the status of the airport as well as certainly increase the assessed evaluation of the city," he said.
A new year, a new mayor and maybe a new Plattsburgh.
The mayor says he and the six new council members will have their first meeting Thursday to get to work right away.
