BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The storm has passed but the roads are still snow-covered in many places and the bitter cold temperatures remain, making it another tough day to be outside.

The first winter storm of 2014 brought more than 2 feet of snow to some places.

In Vermont, roads proved treacherous most of Thursday and cars were off the roads everywhere. And the going remains a problem Friday, with more accidents. A truck flipped over on the Rouses Point Bridge, cutting off traffic across Lake Champlain. And the driver of a fuel tanker lost control in St. Albans, with the tractor becoming decoupled from the trailer.

Highway crews say they are clearing the snow as best as possible, but salt is mostly ineffective in such cold weather.

"That is the biggest problem we have right now. We have various additives we can use, but it's so cold the salt simply will not work at this time," said Bruce Nichols of VTrans.
