Several fires around our region in the last 24 hours were hampered by the severe cold weather. One took place before dawn in the Proctorsville section of Cavendish.
Fire crews arrived at the Main Street home at about 3:30 a.m. Crews attacked the fire on the ground floor, but the flames soon engulfed the home and firefighters were forced to pull back into defensive mode.
Weather conditions made it a tough fire to fight.
"And we had a lot of things going against us, the snow we were dealing with and the cold temps. The air packs were freezing up on us. We had it under control in about two hours, but the house is a total loss at this point," Proctorsville Fire Chief Bob Glidden said.
One person lived in the home. No one was hurt in the fire.
