After a five-week layoff, the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team showed no signs of rust as the Cardinals skated to a 6-0 win over No. 3 Norwich in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Sydney Aveson, who has posted more shutouts than any other Cardinal goaltender, continues to add to that total with her eighth of the season and 25th of her career. Aveson made 27 stops in the win for Plattsburgh State.
Plattsburgh State (10-0-1) took an early 1-0 lead when Giovanna Senese's shot from a tight angle deflected off a Norwich defender and behind Cadets' goaltender Taylor Fairchild. Mia Favretto and Ali Vakos picked up assists on the eventual game-winning goal.
Shannon Stewart added to the lead with her team-leading ninth of the year at the 7:45 mark of the second from Tyne Gove and Allison Era.
Ali Vakos gave the Cardinals a three-goal edge with 7:12 left in the first. Vakos picked up the puck just outside the blue line, carried it into the Norwich end and held off a Norwich defender before beating Fairchild through the five-hole for her fifth of the season.
The Cadets (9-2-0) made a change in goal after Plattsburgh State's third tally, replacing Fairchild with Loren Carrier who went the rest of the way. Fairchild suffered the loss with four saves. Carrier made 32 stops in the effort.
The home team ran away with it late in the third period, scoring three more en route to the 6-0 final. Jordan Caldwell netted her fifth of the year at the 12:40 mark before Senese knocked in Alyssa Parke's rebound less than a minute later for her second of the afternoon.
Plattsburgh State added one more with 6.2 seconds left in the game when Mel Ames found Caitlin Gilligan in front of the net. Gilligan made a move around Carrier and buried her first of the year to round out the scoring.
The Cardinals outshot the Cadets, 42-27, in Saturday's contest. Plattsburgh State went 0-for-4 on the power play while Norwich went 0-for-5.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday in a non-league matchup against Manhattanville. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
