Vt. Railway celebrates 50th anniversary

Posted: Updated:

A birthday celebration in Burlington Monday to mark 50 years of Vermont Railway in the Queen City.

A special 50th anniversary locomotive rolled into Union Station Monday. The engine was dedicated to Joan Wulfson. Her late husband started Vermont Rail System in 1964. The railroad has been part of her life since it started.

"I've always been a railroader at heart.  I was practically in tears out there and it was a big surprise," Wulfson said.

Vermont Rail System operates four railroads in Vermont and another in New York. The family business employs 150 people. The company says its trains keep more than six millions tons of freight off the roads.
