Fate of proposed biomass plant in hands of PSB

NORTH SPRINGFIELD, Vt. -

Will a Massachusetts developer get the OK to build a wood-fired biomass plant in North Springfield? That's what the Public Service Board must now decide.

Both sides made their final arguments before the board.

The $200 million plant in the North Springfield Industrial Park would produce upward of 35 megawatts.

The developer says that would add up to jobs and millions in economic benefits.

Opponents argue that not only is electricity generation an inefficient use of biomass, it's also dirty.

"As the people in Lowell and Sheffield have gone through this, and unfortunately for them, their nightmare came to fruition. We've got enough time to stop this," said Bob Kischko, a neighbor who opposes the plan.

The developer missed a December tax credit deadline worth millions and has faced ongoing competition from cheap natural gas, but he still says that the plant can make a profit.
