Pownal to apply for grant to clean dam

Posted: Updated:

POWNAL, Vt. (AP) - The town of Pownal, Vt., plans to apply for an Environmental Protection Agency grant of $200,000 to clean up a former tannery hydroelectric dam.

A public hearing for the grant was scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the town office.

The dam is on the Hoosic River and the town took "involuntary ownership" of it in 2002 for non-payment of taxes.

The Bennington Banner reports a cotton print cloth manufacturer at the site in 1866 eventually became a tannery in 1935. The dam was built in 1907 and rebuilt in 1955. The company shut down in 1988.

The company became an EPA Superfund site; the dam did not. Developers have looked at making the dam run again, but PCB contamination in the sediment behind it has thwarted those efforts.
