Vt. has already used half winter roads budget

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The active winter weather is draining Vermont's road maintenance budget, but officials say they are not yet facing a crisis.

We told you Wednesday that some communities around our region are running short of salt and sand as demand outpaces supply.

Vermont Transportation officials say the state still has plenty of salt, but with road crews out working so much, the state has used about half of its winter roads budget.

"Because we've used a lot of salt and our crews have been out so much in December, we've spent a lot more on winter maintenance this year to date than we had expected. We've spent around $12 million so far on winter maintenance activities through the end of December and in an average year the number is much lower," said Scott Rogers of the Vt. Transportation Agency.

Rogers says the budget problem could resolve itself if the second half of the winter is calmer. But if not, the agency will likely make up the overrun by reducing its spring and summer maintenance.
