Fletcher Allen confirms resurgence of flu strain

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Doctors at Vermont's largest hospital have now confirmed the predominant strain of the flu in the state so far is H1N1.

Last week we told you that Fletcher Allen Health Care had just confirmed its first eight cases of the flu through its outpatient clinics and the emergency room. Now, the number is up to 34 and some patients are in the intensive care unit. We know that one is a 45-year-old man who is now on a ventilator to help him breathe. That scenario is typical of reports around the country of otherwise young, healthy people becoming seriously ill from the H1N1 flu strain.

The Vermont Health Department is still reporting localized outbreak in the state, which means one region.

Doctors are encouraging people to get vaccinated. The H1N1 strain is included in this year's flu shot.
