BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Champlain College in Burlington announced its eighth president Friday.

Donald Laackman will take the reins of the school starting July 1. His previous job was as president of Harold Washington College, which is part of the City Colleges of Chicago system.

Laackman was selected out of 100 applicants and has signed a three-year contract.

He says he comes from a "college to career" focused system and he hopes to bring that here and encourage Vermont students to stay in-state after graduation.

"I will be working extensively with the business community on a strategy that is really centered on the importance of human capital and Champlain's role in helping prepare students for lives both in the undergraduate and graduate level so they can be more productive and help companies grow," Laackman said.

Laackman is taking over for David Finney who served as president of Champlain College for nine years.
