Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A man is safe following a water rescue on the Winooski River in Burlington Sunday afternoon.

Burlington Fire fighters responded to Intervale Road after a homeless person-  living in an encampment by the river called 911.  He told responders that he became stranded after being surrounded by rising waters.

"The water is starting to come up all around the river and of course as always, ice is very unstable and very unsafe during these times when we are getting this warm weather and rain.  Currents are starting to move underneath the ice, so please stay off the ice," said the Burlington Fire Department's David Roberts.

Fire fighters were able to dress the man in an exposure suit and help him walk to safety.  He was not injured.  The entire rescue only took a matter of minutes.
