RICHMOND, Vt. -

A large barn filled with vegetables was destroyed by fire Monday morning.

Thick smoke shrouded Old Andrews farm on Route 2 during the peak of the blaze before sunrise. A few hours later all that was left was a pile of smoking rubble and charred root vegetables. Fire crews were alerted to the blaze by a passerby at about 5 a.m. and had little chance of saving the structure. "Upon arrival at the scene, I noticed fire in the interior of the barn and it started to come out the cupola on top of the barn -- spread real quick throughout the entire structure," said Richmond Fire Chief Tom Levesque.

The barn was used to process turkeys in the Fall, but did not house any livestock.  No one was hurt in the fire.  Damages was estimated in excess of $200,000.   The cause has not been pin pointed, but the chief did not believe it was suspicious in nature.
