Communicating with those who have trouble communicating.
To help those suffering with dementia, Naomi Feil came up with "Validation Therapy," a way of getting to the root cause of a patient's delusions -- through discussion. According to Feil, listening to a dementia patient and finding the reason behind a delusion will make that patient feel better.
Feil visited Plattsburgh Monday and Tuesday to introduce health care professionals in the area to the technique. "I role play the old person a lot who has been diagnosed with dementia, so that the people can respond to me and learn certain techniques that will help them in their work, and to learn empathy," Feil said.
Feil tours the world doing group workshops to show health care professionals what she calls -- a better ways to deal with those diagnosed with dementia.
