'Captain Phillips' goes for Oscar gold

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

"Captain Phillips" is eyeing Oscar gold. The real-life-story turned big-screen thriller picked up six nominations, including best picture and best supporting actor for Barkhad Abdi, the Somali actor from Minneapolis making his Hollywood debut.

"I was so excited I couldn't sleep last night - thinking about it," Abdi said.

No nomination, though, for Tom Hanks, who played the movie version of Richard Phillips from Underhill.

The Vermont ship captain was kidnapped by Somali pirates and held captive until Navy SEALs brazenly rescued him and the crew.

The movie faces off in the best picture category against films like "American Hustle," "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity." Tough competition for Hollywood's highest honor.

The Oscars are March 2.
