Mural artist paints her way around Vermont

Posted: Updated:
HARDWICK, Vt. -

This is not your average canvas, but for artist Tara Goreau it was the start of series of paintings. She did this two years ago for the co-owner of Jasper Hill Creamery. It turns out whey, a byproduct of making cheese, is good for pigs to eat and that tank is where the whey is stored.

"It's very cosmic," she says.

Goreau moved on to a bigger canvas for her next work for Jasper Hill. She painted this blue cheese moon on the barn with some cheese planets and cows spiraling through space.

The barn Goreau painted at Jasper Hill Creamery is now part of her latest mural here at the Food Venture Center in Hardwick, where Jasper Hill makes its cheese.

"I'm looking at my reference photos as to the cows internal organs and how milk is made and trying to tie that into cheese," she explains.

This cow, on a wall that's about 14 by 12 feet, started with an outline in pencil. It's a messy process to start and she says that's the benefit of this big canvas.

"When I realized I was making this part of the cow's stomach there was a person at the end and it might stick and it might not," she says.

The flexibility with the paint she uses also makes it easy to have the mural evolve. She uses house paint and says, it's relatively thin so she can add layers and layers.

Goreau says, it's normally children who see detailed things in her murals.

"They sometimes see things that I hide because they're not glazing over the whole thing, they're looking at the little details that are unexpected," she says. "When I was painting at City Market this little girl came in with her parents one morning and she just sat there and looked at me and watched me paint for about half an hour and then a few hours later she came back with her parents and gave me a picture that she had painted of me painting and I was just so touched by that. It was just so cool because you never know, maybe you're inspiring someone else to be an artist."

Or, to just stop and enjoy the view. A view created, more and more often, by artist Tara Goreau. She's had a busy week. She finished up the cow mural Friday and this past Wednesday there was a dedication at the Morrisville Senior Center for another one of her murals.

The seniors paid for the mural through a bingo fund. Now they sell postcards of it to fundraise for the senior center.
