Reading and learning about Martin Luther King, Jr.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Some kids in Burlington are getting a head start on celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Fletcher Free Library showed the children's movie, "Martin's Big Words", based on the picture book on the civil rights leader's life.

Saturday, kids enjoyed the film and read the book with their parents, and also learned about other African American traditions such as Kwanzaa and the life of John Henry.

The library says the upcoming holiday is a great opportunity to educate children about different cultures.

Christine Demarais, the library's Youth Services Assistant, said Saturday, "It's part of our mission to be diverse and open to different cultures and to reflect the diversity of this country and the Burlington area."

The library will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but will hold a breakfast for young people at 9 am at the Contois Auditorium in Burlington.
