BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A special tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela brought Vermonters together Sunday at the Unitarian Church in Burlington.

Author and daughter of Jackie Robinson -- Sharon Robinson -- was this year's keynote speaker. Robinson shared memories of her father  as a baseball player and a civil rights activist.
Robinson encouraged everyone to continue their work toward diversity as they remember Martin Luther King Jr.  Mayor Miro Weinberger and Senator Bernie Sanders also shared a few words.

"King had incredible courage, and a fight -- not only in America -- that ended segregation but said that every child in this country, every person in this country was entitled to health care, education, to jobs, to decent wages; Let's never forget," Sen. Sanders said.

"We admire Dr. King and the work that he did years ago but we continue to talk about the importance of staying in that struggle. That struggle is ongoing. We try to embrace all cultures, all people and learn from them," Robinson said.  "The Robinson family -- we admire Dr. King and the work that he did years ago but we continue to talk about the importance of staying in that struggle. The struggle is ongoing and it doesn't end when someone passes. In our home we talk about the importance of community. Our community is not just in our family but our community is larger than that."

Robinson is an educational consultant for Major League Baseball and is Vice Chair of the Jackie Robinson Foundation.  Awards were also presented Sunday to community leaders who have encouraged equality and justice in Vermont.
