Lawmakers delve into lake, stream protections

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont Senate committee is taking up House-passed legislation that seeks to provide protections for lake shore lands and near-shore waters, while a House panel looks at agricultural impacts on water quality.

The Senate's consideration of the shore lands protection bill follows controversy and compromise over the issue in the House last year. Environmentalists worry about clear-cutting of vegetation along lake shores that provides key wildlife habitat, while lake shore property owners say they fear infringements of their property rights.

A House committee, meanwhile, is considering a broad-ranging water quality improvement bill that addresses runoff both from farms and from municipal and state roads.
