ANR to pay penalty for lab violations

File File
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

It's supposed to protect the environment, but now the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources faces it's own an environmental violation.

The Attorney General's office says ANR mishandled a shipment of environmental waste. The hazardous waste was shipped in October 2012, but didn't make it to the waste disposal facility until March of 2013. It will pay a $12,000 penalty and also put $6,000 into a fund that supports lab safety in Vermont schools.

It's not the first time ANR has run afoul of the AG's office.  In 2011 the Agency agreed to pay a hefty fine for another incident of mishandling hazardous materials.
