NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont town of Newfane so dislikes a hulking safe blamed for breaking the town office floor that it's paying nearly $5,000 to get rid of it.
The safe, which weighs a ton, does hold papers and other office items. But town employees don't want to lock the safe, fearing a locksmith would be the only person who could unlock it.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports the exact origin of the safe is unclear, but it arrived at its current home in 1986.
Last year, the safe was blamed for playing a role in broken floor joists below the select board meeting room. The problem was corrected as part of a renovation project that addressed multiple basement problems.
Select board chairman Jon Mack says the safe is completely useless.
