Chemical leak at Hannaford in Middlebury

Three grocery store employees were taken to the hospital Thursday morning after a refrigerant leak.

Emergency crews responded to the Hannaford in Middlebury at about 5 a.m. A Hannaford spokesman says three employees had entered an area of the store and experienced shortness of breath and dizziness.

Hazmat crews were called in and determined there was a leak of a refrigerant called chlorodifluoromethane. Crews vented clean air into the area and the broken refrigerant line was repaired.

The store opened for the day at about 10:30 a.m.

Hannaford's spokesman says the employees who were overcome were checked out at the hospital and returned to work.
