ESSEX, Vt. -

A man had to be rescued in Essex after his car wound up in a stream.

Police say the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday when a car went off Lamore Road.

When rescue crews arrived, they say the car was flipped on its roof and in the water. First responders had to pull the driver, Martin Ryan of Colchester, from the back of the car to get him out. Ryan was conscious, but authorities say he was trapped in the water for close to 15 minutes.

"Well, obviously the biggest hazard for him is hypothermia. It's very cold out here right now and part of his body was in water," said Lt. George Henry with Essex Rescue.

Ryan was taken to the hospital. Police say his injuries were not life-threatening.

Officials say slippery road conditions may have been a factor.
