Have an unpaid parking ticket in Rutland? You may be off the hook if the city treasurer gets her way.
Wendy Wilton is pushing the select board to dismiss delinquent parking tickets that are more than 7 years old.
The city is owed $242,000 in outstanding tickets. About 25 percent of those fines-- or about $60,000-- are more than 7 years old.
Wilton wants the board to change its existing policy and place a five-year statute of limitations on parking tickets. She says trying to collect the old, delinquent fines ends up being more costly to taxpayers than simply wiping them off the books.
