ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS -

A family from Northern New York is among hundreds of cruise ship passengers stuck on a boat filled with sick people.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 281 passengers and 22 crew members have gotten sick aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.  Authorities said it's not clear what is causing the illness, but symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea.

Monica Lattrell of Plattsburgh boarded the Explorer of the Seas Tuesday with several family members. "They started locking things down, everyone who is quarantined has a sticker over their door, and there were so many they actually ran out of stickers and are now using post it notes over everyone's door.  It hit my daughter first, who is six years old. Bedridden for two days, she has not eaten this entire cruise. She has actually lost weight. My husband got it next. My aunt and uncle had both gotten it -- they are both very sick. And my sister-in-law. They are very ill without being reported, so that right there gives you another five people," Lattrell said.

More than 4,100 passengers and crew are aboard.  Health officials were expected to board the ship Sunday while it was docked in St. Thomas.
