Student study addresses domestic violence impacts at work

Posted: Updated:

The Safe at Work Network has teamed up with the Church Street Marketplace to create Vermont's first domestic violence survey for local businesses.

The goal is to help Chittenden County business owners understand how to address the impact of domestic violence on workplace productivity. Ninety-one percent of the 85 businesses surveyed said domestic violence can affect the workplace. A quarter of those businesses said domestic violence has had an impact on their employees. The survey was created by a group of Saint Michael's College students.

"We want to get a conversation started in the community. This is an issue that needs to be addressed. It's been quiet for too long and the conversation needs to be started. The discourse needs to be brought up because these are real issues," said Kirsten Eilertsen, a St. Mike's senior.

The Safe Network hopes to soon use the survey to help businesses throughout the state of Vermont address domestic violence.
