ESSEX, Vt. -

Williston Police are conducting an internal investigation as why one of their officers accidentally fired a semi-automatic rifle following an emergency call Saturday.

According to Essex Police, Williston officer Josh Hansell, 29, was assisting Essex officers at a reckless endangerment incident just before 8 p.m. Saturday night. Authorities say after the incident, Officer Hansell was clearing his rifle when it accidentally discharged into his cruiser's passenger compartment.  The cruiser was unoccupied and no one was injured, but the floorboard and possibly the transmission were damaged.

Officer Hansell remains on active duty status.
