Burglars hit St. Albans convenience store

ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

A convenience store that was frequently targeted by armed robbers has now been hit by burglars.

At about 3 a.m. Thursday, a thief smashed the glass front door of the Southend Grocery in St. Albans. Police were quickly on scene, but were not able to track down a suspect.

"Took some cigarettes and took some other merchandise and fled on foot. We had a canine come in, we tracked him up toward the back of the store. Ended up losing the track down around the Nason Street area," St. Albans Police Det. Paul Morits said.

The store used to be open 24 hours a day, but after several late night robberies the store is now closed overnight.
