I cannot believe how many times I've been to Saratoga and I have never been to the Yaddo Gardens! It is gorgeous in here! It's right down the road from the race track! You drive right past it. This garden is a sanctuary. It's a retreat that was created over a hundred years ago by Spencer and Katrina Trask.
They were financiers from New York City, and of course, what better place to retreat to, than Saratoga. His wife was a poet and you can tell, because this is a very poetic and serene place.
He had the retreat house built and then as a gift of love to his wife, Katrina, he created these gardens. He started with a very idyllic and poetic garden. The beautiful garden area with lots of water garden plants, a fountain, a statuary and then a mound of rocks with a fountain shooting straight up through it. It just cascades down over the ferns that are growing there. Just a beautiful, quiet, serene place tucked away in the woods.
As a contrast to the informality of this rock garden, there's a pergola of roses, a formal rose garden, and more statuaries, a big pool, and a big fountain with Italian statues as you first walk in. So it's a great contrast seeing the poetic side of things, and the very classical side of things in this one garden that's right off of the thruway.
I can just picture these ladies walking around in their long dresses in here! And the best part about these gardens is that they are free and they are open to the public so anyone can come in to enjoy them.
