Vt. House passes 'net metering' bill

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont House has given final approval to a bill that would expand nearly four-fold a program that requires utilities to take electricity from homeowners who have their own solar or other generating systems.

Thursday's voice vote approving the "net metering" bill followed a 136-8 roll call vote giving it preliminary approval on Wednesday.

Utilities had been required to take net-metered electricity up to an amount equal to 4 percent of their total peak demand. The new legislation would expand that to 15 percent through 2016, when federal renewable energy tax credits expire.

In 2015 the Public Service Board would be asked to redesign the net metering program for Vermont, and submit its ideas to the Legislature.
