DGA says it raised $28 million to elect governors

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Democratic Governors Association says it raised $28 million last year.

The association on Thursday released a summary of its 2013 fundraising that shows a 40 percent increase from the amount it raised in 2009. The summary did not indicate how much it has in the bank.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, who chairs the association, says the money will be used to defeat Republicans who have pursued economic policies that help the wealthiest. Shumlin says his group's money will help Democrats who work across partisan lines.

There are 36 gubernatorial races in 2014. Of those, Republicans control the governor's office in 22 states.

The Republican Governors Association earlier this week said it raised $50.3 million last year and has roughly the same amount in the bank.
