RUTLAND, Vt. -

A taxi driver accused of robbing his passenger says he didn't steal from him. In fact, he says it was the other way around.

Alex Kerpel was arrested on assault and robbery charges. One of his passengers says early Sunday morning, the Leon's Taxi driver shoved him to the ground, and then stole his wallet.

The Rutland Herald reports Kerpel told police he was given the wallet when the passengers couldn't pay their fare, and then they started fighting amongst themselves.

The taxi driver says he tried to break up the fight to help a woman caught in the middle and that's when he was attacked.

Kerpel could serve up to 10 years if convicted.
