The Burlington Auditorium hosted the final night of the Northern New England Golden Gloves tournament on Saturday. The evening caps off three straight Saturday's of action.
Six Vermont boxers were vying for novice championship state titles including a former UVM Catamount hockey captain. In the 141 lb class, Brett Leonard from South Burlington faced Jeff Prevost of Rumford, ME. Prevost won via unanimous decision.
The evening was highlighted by Ferrisburgh's Dave Huckabay knockout blow to Cody Frye from Fryburg, ME. That was for the Light Heavyweight Championship. Burlington's Doug Dimmick, a Heavyweight, had his fight against Ramone Saintville of Lewiston, Me stopped, because the referee felt Saintville couldn't continue.
There were also bouts that included open class boxers as well as a Master Class bout with two Super Heavyweights from New Hampshire. ( Masters are boxers who are 35 years old an up)
Novice champions will box in the New England Golden Gloves Novice Championships in Lowell, MA Feb. 11th & 18th. Open champions will box in the New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, also in Lowell, Feb. 25th & 26th.
