Sandro Carissimo scored a game-high 17 points and reached the 1,000-career point mark and Brian Voelkel became the all-time leader in assists at Vermont with eight helpers as the Catamounts posted a 55-45 victory at Albany in America East men's basketball action on Saturday night.
Vermont improves to 8-1 in America East and 14-9 overall, while Albany falls to 11-11 on the year and 5-4 in league play.
Carissimo, went 3-for-7 from 3-point range, and scored 10 of his 17 points in the first half, including his 1,000th career point on a 3-pointer. Candon Rusin also added 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting for the Catamounts.
Peter Hooley scored 11 points and added four rebounds to pace the Great Danes, while Gary Johnson added 10 points and six boards for Albany.
The Catamounts fell behind 6-0 to start the game, but after a UVM timeout, Vermont used a 16-2 run to take a 16-8 lead with 5:50 left in the half. The Catamounts limited Albany to just five field goals and 19.2 percent shooting from the field and led 21-12 at the break.
UVM pushed its lead to 13, 31-18 at the 13:19 mark of the second half after a layup by Rusin. The Great Danes were able to climb back within nine following a jumper by John Puk at the 11:18 mark, but Vermont was able to push its lead to 16 on a 3-pointer by Carissimo with 4:52 left and sealed the win by making 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch.
Vermont hosts Maine on Tuesday (Feb. 4) at Patrick Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
