Vt. farm buys 245 acres, then conserves it

Posted: Updated:

CRAFTSBURY, Vt. (AP) - A four-season Vermont vegetable farm has purchased 245 acres of land in Craftsbury and conserved it with the Vermont Land Trust, ensuring the land will remain in agricultural use.

Pete's Greens of Craftsbury recently purchased the former Ryan Farm on Route 14.

The sale included a conservation easement that allowed the farm to buy the land at its agricultural value. Funding for the land conservation was donated by the Freeman Foundation.

Pete's Green's owner Pete Johnson says it's a challenge to find land for his farm and he's pleased that the land will be used for agriculture for generations to come.

Pete's Greens has a four-season operation, 12 full-time employees. It delivers its products to more than 25 locations and has 500 members.
