Target 'deeply sorry' for data breach

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

An executive from Target told a U.S. Senate committee Tuesday the company is "deeply sorry" for a recent data breach that affected tens of millions of customers.

Target was called before a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee which is looking for solutions to a rising number of data breaches in which thieves steal credit card numbers and other personal data.

Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy says like other Americans, he has been alarmed by the recent security breaches at Target Neiman Marcus, and Michael's stores.

"American consumers deserve to know when their private information has been compromised and what a business is doing in response to a cyberattack," said Leahy, D-Vermont.

Company executives who testified say they are committed to enhancing cybersecurity, but they say they have not found solutions to the malware that is making it through their multilayered security systems.
