MONTPELIER, Vt. -

An eighth-grader is helping older generations reconnect with lost memories thanks to some modern technology.

Alexa Kartschoke of Williston asked family, friends and her local community to donate iPods. She ended up collecting 15, which will be donated to the Vermont Veterans' Home in Bennington.

Music has been shown to tap into deep memories, so dementia patients there will have their favorite tunes uploaded onto the MP3 players.

"I was trying to think how could I connect music to my community and how could I connect music to helping people... not like just plain old music," Kartschoke said.

The Music and Memory program at the veterans' home is a relatively new program.

The facility is currently home to nearly 150 vets, 60 of whom receive care for memory disorders.
