Hassan supports NH domestic violence bill

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Gov. Maggie Hassan, in her State of the State address, is calling for passage of a bill that would establish a crime of domestic violence in New Hampshire.

The bill was introduced following the death of 9-year-old Joshua Savyon, who was killed in August at a Manchester YWCA during a supervised visit with his father, who also killed himself.

Joshua's mother, Becky Ranes, testified in favor of the bill last month.

In her address Thursday, Hassan addressed Ranes, saying that no one could grasp the pain she bears every day. But Hassan said everyone is inspired by Ranes' courage in sharing her story and that her strength gives them all strength.

Hassan called "Joshua's Law" a common-sense measure to help law enforcement and prosecutors better identify and stop repeat abusers.
