Reaction to Hassan speech mixed; GOP seeks details

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Reaction to Gov. Maggie Hassan's State of the State speech is drawing praise as well as demands for more details from New Hampshire lawmakers.

Senate Republican Leader Jeb Bradley of Wolfeboro said Thursday's speech had a good, bipartisan tone. He said Senate Republicans agree with her on some of her proposals affecting business, such as reforming the worker's compensation program. Bradley said the Senate is less likely to support her if she backs an increase on the gas and diesel tax for road improvements.

House Republican Leader Gene Chandler of Bartlett said he wants more details on how Hassan would pay for programs mentioned in her speech, such as improving health coverage for the mentally ill.

Bradley also said Republicans want any surplus from last year to be saved, not spent.
