The founder and former president of the Bennington School, Inc., is heading to prison.
Matthew Merritt, 82, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to being part of a scheme to defraud a health care program and commit tax fraud. The senior citizen will also serve a year of supervised release following his prison term.
The Justice Department says Merritt compensated certain employees at the school with things like cars and home heating assistance that were never reported on the individual's tax returns.
The Merritt family has already paid $3 million to the federal government and the state of Vermont to resolve potential civil fraud liability.
