Vt. police conduct tactical response training at Burlington mall

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Vermont State Police Tactical Team and Crisis negotiators responded the Burlington Town Center Mall Thursday night.

Luckily it was just a drill in conjunction with the Burlington Police Department. The mission was for authorities to streamline multi-agency responses in case of a real emergency.

These special teams used the mall to practice for an active shooter situation. The public was cleared from the building, but they may have noticed an increased police presence outside. The drills happen monthly but using a mall was a first.

"Having not done this in this kind of space before, it should be a good opportunity to isolate some issues we're looking at and make it right so that if we do engage somebody in this type of situation, our people will be the best they can be," explained Capt. Tim Clouatre with the Vermont State Police

The officers appeared armed but no live ammunition was used during the exercises.

Earlier in the evening officers set-up at the Charlotte Central School to practice how they would respond to a shooter in a school building.
