Dartmouth centers focused on assault prevention

Posted: Updated:

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) - Dartmouth College is opening a new center for the prevention of sexual assault and violence.

The office will serve as the hub for a new initiative that trains students to become better bystanders by helping their peers and defusing threatening situations. It will be known as the Center for Community Action and Prevention and will be directed by Amanda Childress, who has been the college's Sexual Assault Awareness Program Coordinator for the past two years.

In a speech to faculty in November, Dartmouth President Philip Hanlon said about 600 students have gone through the bystander training and another 800 are expected to be trained by this summer.
