LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -

Amid the excitement of the Olympics, in New York, competition is underway at the Empire State Winter Games.

It's the 34th year of the winter games, which bring together more than 1,400 athletes from all over the country to compete in sports ranging from alpine skiing to figure skating to snocross.

Organizers say these athletes are competing in the same sports as the Olympians in Sochi and for some, it's part of chasing their dreams.

"For some, who knows, this could be their first step to an Olympic dream someday and for others it's a great way for them to compete against their peers," says ORDA spokesperson Jon Lundin.

Saturday starting at 5 p.m. there's the Empire SportsFest at the speedskating oval, including competitive sports like speedstaking and interactive ones like curling and paintball biathlon. It ends with fireworks at 7 p.m. The games will continue through Sunday.
