Former classmates of Devin Logan say she was tackling obstacles on and off the slopes as a young skier passionate about her sport.
"She actually would bring a note and give it to my managers so she could rent skis because she was too young," said Paige Ruiz, a high school classmate.
Now, the Southern Vermont town of Dover is basking in the glory of Logan's silver medal performance at the Olympics in Sochi.
"Words can't describe the feeling it brought-- with her being from the town where I grew up," said Michael Gramazio of Dover.
Gramazio says the 20-year-old was friends with his sister and spent fun times at their home.
"She was always a really upbeat, happy, down-to-earth person; she was just fun to be around," Gramazio said.
A sentiment other longtime friends echo.
"She's a very bubbly person, very nice, always open to new things. She always wants to talk to people, anyone who comes up to her she always wants to talk to them," said Samantha Joslin, a friend.
Those enjoying the snow at part of Mount Snow know as Carinthia, where they frequently share the slopes with Logan, say the area deserves to be highlighted.
"Best park in the East," skier Dan Morrell said.
"I was like wow, I went to school with her-- pretty cool. Put our hometown of West Dover and Mount Snow on the map," Ruiz said.
Logan also has another reason to celebrate-- her 21st birthday is coming up. Some friends here say she may be planning a trip to Las Vegas and possibly a tattoo to mark her win. Either way, she has a lot to celebrate.
The slushy course caused problems for other competitors, like Yuki Tsubota of Canada. Tsubota crashed at the end of her second run. She is being examined for a possible fractured jaw. Logan lost the gold to Canada's Dara Howell. The other local athlete in the event, Julia Krass of Hanover, N.H., came in 11th.
