KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia -

A first for the United States in luge.

Erin Hamlin of Lake Placid grabbed the bronze in the women's singles event Tuesday.

The 27-year-old broke through in her third Olympics-- winning the first medal of any kind for an American in singles luge.

"It's amazing," Hamlin said. "It's surreal, really."

When Hamlin crossed the line, the medal finally clinched, she threw her arms skyward, and then covered her face briefly with her hands. U.S. coach Mark Grimmette-- a doubles medalist for the Americans-- raced over to congratulate her, and men's slider Chris Mazdzer reached down from the bleachers to hand her the U.S. flag.

"I'm sure everyone at home is going crazy," Hamlin said, "and I can't wait to get home to see them."
