COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Authorities say a Vermont man who failed to appear in court on charges that he stole and sold a historical document has been found dead.

The Burlington Free Press reports Colchester police confirmed 55-year-old Patrick Rooney was found dead at his apartment Tuesday night. They said the death was considered a suicide and ordered an autopsy.

Police went to Rooney's home after family became concerned about his well-being. An arrest warrant was issued after he failed to appear for arraignment Tuesday on possession and selling of stolen property, the "Chittenden County Road Commissioners 1828-1831" manuscript. It sold for $625 to the University of Vermont's Bailey/Howe Library.

Rooney had pleaded not guilty to taking a page dated 1791 from "The Proprietors Volume" from Burlington's Fletcher Free Library.
