ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State Police report 87 guns were stolen last year altogether in five counties of northern New York.
The Troop B Gun Investigation Unit says most firearms were taken from private residences, with a few stolen from vehicles during hunting season.
The total represents a drop from 141 guns reported stolen the year before.
Troopers say that for half the long guns taken, owners didn't provide an accurate description or serial number, making thefts difficult to investigate and guns difficult to recover.
Totals stolen include 13 handguns and 36 rifles and shotguns in St. Lawrence County, nine handguns and 18 long guns in Franklin County, four handguns and three long guns in Clinton County, three handguns and one long gun in Essex County and none stolen in Hamilton County.
