Vt. lawmakers skeptical after US trade rep talks

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont lawmakers are expressing skepticism after a telephone meeting with officials from the U.S. trade representative that Vermont's interests in environmental protection and labor rights are being protected.

But spokeswoman Carol Guthrie and other officials with the federal office say the Obama administration is working hard to improve from the international trade deals that have been struck under previous administrations.

Vermont lawmakers have been vocal in their criticism of international pacts like the North American Free Trade Agreement. In Thursday's telephone meeting with the federal trade officials, they complained about a continuing lack of transparency.

Thursday's meeting came a week after talks were put off when Vermont lawmakers refused a request from the U.S. trade representative's office that media be excluded from the meeting.
