BOLTON, Vt. -

A major storm hit the region, making a mess of the roads.

The bad weather is blamed for a death on Interstate 91 in Fairlee. Police say a Massachusetts tractor-trailer driver hit the guardrails and jackknifed. He got out of the big rig and was struck by another driver who couldn't see him because of a white out. The tractor-trailer driver died at the hospital.

And the winter weather is causing trouble on roads all across our region.

It was a mess for drivers on Interstate 89 southbound in Bolton Friday afternoon.

"It started with a chain reaction event," Vt. State Police Lt. Jim Whitcomb said.

A dozen cars ended up scattered along the shoulder and down a roadside ravine between Exits 11 and 10.

"One car at mile marker 68 southbound was off the road, troopers were responding. In the meantime, two vehicles went off the road into the center median as troopers arrived-- that reaction was starting," Whitcomb said.

State police redirected traffic as tow truck drivers worked to get drivers back on the road.

"We're all working hard to get the lanes opened up quickly, but we want everyone to be safe when we're doing it," Whitcomb said.

Police say no injuries were reported from those accidents.

The interstate wasn't the only place to see significant problems in the storm. Three delivery trucks got stuck in the snow blocking the road to Mad River Glen. About 100 drivers ended up leaving their cars on the shoulder as people hiked up the mountain to ski.

Police are reminding folks that no matter where you're heading behind the wheel, the best thing you can do to prevent more problems is to play it safe.

"Speed is really the key if we can keep staying slow and certainly even slow down more when you see red or blue lights in front of you," Whitcomb said.
