Clancy Rugg scored a game-high 19 points behind an 11-for-12 effort from the foul line and Ethan O'Day added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Vermont Catamounts cruised to a 76-52 victory over UMBC in America East men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont improves to 11-1 in America East and 17-9 overall. The Catamounts have won six straight and 13 of their last 14 contests. UMBC falls to 9-17 on the year and 5-8 in league play.
Vermont jumped out to a 21-6 lead midway through the first half. The Catamounts limited UMBC to two made field goals in the first 10 minutes and forced the Retrievers into six turnovers. Sandro Carissimo led UVM in the spurt, scoring six points, as UVM went 9-for-12 from the field to start the game.
Vermont pushed its lead to 19, 31-12, on a layup by Kurt Steidl at the 4:53 mark of the half and went into the break with a 37-21 advantage.
The Catamounts limited UMBC to nine field goals in the second half (31 percent shooting) and rolled to their eighth win of the year at Patrick Gymnasium.
Carissimo added 10 points, all in the first half. He also handed out three assists and collected three steals for the Catamounts.
Rodney Eliot netted a team-high nine points to pace the Retrievers.
Vermont finished the game shooting 49.2 percent from the floor, while UMBC shot 32.7 percent for the game. The Catamounts out rebounded the Retrievers 43-34 and out scored them 46-22 in the paint. UVM also scored 21 points off 21 UMBC turnovers in the contest.
Vermont travels to Durham, N.H. on Wednesday (Feb. 19) to face the New Hampshire Wildcats. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lundholm Gymnasium.
