LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Maine gambling officials say customers wagered more than $1.1 billion on slot machines last year at the state's two casinos. The Legislature is considering whether to approve up to three more casinos and one slot parlor.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The state of Maine says the value of the state's commercial fishery increased by more than $2 million last year even though there was a 15 million pound decrease in the size of the catch. Lobster brought in a record $364.5 million last year and the size of the catch topped 100 million pounds for a third consecutive year.
FALMOUTH, Maine (AP) - The town of Falmouth is willing to spend up to $200,000 to help buy and preserve an island off the coast of Maine for public use. Town councilors have voted to help buy Clapboard Island. The town's contribution would be added to a fundraising campaign led by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Supporters say wildlife thrives on the island.
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire Senate plans to vote Thursday on a bill to use federal Medicaid money to buy private health insurance for an estimated 50,000 poor adults. The bill is expected to pass and has a good chance of also passing the House. Gov. Maggie Hassan supports the bill.
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The Senate Ways and Means Committee is taking up the issue of whether to raise the state tax on gas and diesel. Under the proposal, the 18 cent tax would rise about 4 cents per gallon in July. It has not been increased since 1991 and is the lowest in New England.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Redemption centers and environmental advocates are opposing a measure in Vermont that would repeal the deposit on 1 liter or larger liquor bottles and beverage containers. The measure is part of an effort to move the state closer to a single-stream solid waste system.
BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Bennington Economic and Community Development director says a major clothing store is eyeing a 50,000-square foot store in the southwestern Vermont community. Michael Harrington says that if the business can find a location that meets its requirements, it will come to Bennington.
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Trader Joe's says it will open its first Vermont store this spring. The grocery store chain says a 12,800-square-foot store will open May 16 in South Burlington next to the Healthy Living Market and Cafe. South Burlington approved plans for the store last year.
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermonters will take on budgeting, elections, and public banks in this year's town meeting day. Some towns Tuesday also will discuss articles on wind power, gas pipelines, and gun control. The town meeting tradition goes back to 1762 when the first recorded town meeting was held in Bennington.
